Weight Loss Surgery

Weight Loss Surgery

Are you considering weight loss surgery? Nearly three quarters of the US population has struggled with their weight at some point. And, most people think they know what the doctor is going to say when they walk through the door. The most obvious are diet and exercise. And, the truth is, many can be successful using these tools alone. By increasing cardiac activity and lowering caloric intake, a good proportion of the population is going to see some weight come off. On the other hand, what if not enough comes off? What about the people who have a metabolic problem or a genetic condition that will prevent them from losing weight? In these circumstances, weight loss surgery may be an option.

Weight loss surgery is expensive, but there are ways to save money. The simplest way to save is by comparing rates and getting the best costs, assuming you're paying out of pocket. The cost of weight loss surgery might vary widely between clinics, depending on its full range of services, the size of its staff, the experience of its surgeons, and various other factors. Another option to save money is to get your procedure done in Mexico or India, where healthcare is less regulated and costs can be thousands of dollars cheaper. People who want weight loss surgery should also consider how they'll save money after their procedures from smaller grocery bills, fewer doctor visits, less of a need for dieting programs, and numerous other factors.

One of the most common types of weight loss surgery that people have heard of is called the gastric band. During this procedure, a surgeon will tie a gastric band around a portion of the stomach. The stomach is not removed; however, this part of the stomach is pressed together. Because of this procedure, the stomach feels smaller. Therefore, you will feel full sooner. As a result, you will eat less because they feel full and, as a result, consume fewer calories. Ultimately, when people consume fewer calories, they should start to lose weight. One of the possible complications of this surgery is that the band could fall off, necessitating a repeat operation. If someone loses enough weight and would like the band removed, it is relatively easy.

The second most popular weight loss surgery is called a gastric bypass. The technical term is a Roux-en-Y, and during this procedure, the bottom portion of the stomach is disconnected from the top part of the stomach. Then, the top part of the stomach, while still connected to the esophagus, is connected to the intestines. The main portion of the stomach also remains connected to the intestines. As a result, the intestines make a "Y" shape, thus the name. One of the side effects that people might have with this treatment is diarrhea. Because the stomach has been disconnected from the rest of its body, food could enter the intestines quickly, leading to diarrhea.

A lesser-known option for weight loss surgery is called the duodenal switch. In this procedure, the stomach is restricted and there is a bilio-pancreatic diversion. The idea is to quicken the digestion of food while also making the stomach smaller. This is a complicated procedure that is not used as much as the other options; however, it can be effective for weight loss. There is a high risk of diarrhea because of the rapid pace of digestion. This is a radical procedure and requires extensive dieting, blood testing and work with a dietician prior to surgery. Those who have trouble with other weight loss options may find this effective.
